TMJ Problems
The term TMJ is an abbreviation for Temporo-Mandibular joint, or the jaw joint. The TMJ is the joint formed by the temporal bone of the skull with the condyle of mandible. There are two TM joints, one in front of each ear. These joints move each time we chew, talk or swallow. It is the most complex joint in the body. Separating these two articulating bones is a disc.
A temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is the term describes all functional disturbances of the masticatory system.
Most common Symptoms of TMD are frequent headaches, clicking or popping jaw joints, pain when chewing or yawning, grinding or clenching your teeth, neck/shoulder pain, worn teeth, your teeth do not touch when you bite, "stiffness" in your jaw joints that makes it difficult to open or to close your mouth. Again, only a qualified health care practitioner can tell you for certain if any of these problems are a direct result of TMD.

Methods for successful diagnosis and treatment of TMD vary from patient to patient. Some problems may require a "team-approach" which means several different health care practitioners may be working with you concurrently to help alleviate your problem. Treatment can take time and even the amount of time varies from patient to patient.

At Apex, we have a specialist Prosthodontist, Who will conduct a careful clinical examination to determine the cause of your symptoms.

He will examine your temporomandibular joints for pain or tenderness; listen for clicking, popping or grating sounds during jaw movement; look for limited motion or locking of the jaw while opening or closing the mouth; and examine bite and facial muscles.
